Sublingual Immunotherapy is a recent development in treatment of allergy which allows for the treatment of allergic reactions without the need for multiple visits and injections.
Allergy arises from the overreaction of the immune system to proteins in the environment (pollen and dust) which it should not react to. This reaction causes the common symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, eye watering and even some more serious issues, such as airway constriction and anaphylaxis.
The body normally displays a phenomenon called tolerance towards most environmental proteins. Tolerance requires the body shut down its natural immune reaction to allergens, and cease reacting to them.
Due to many factors, such as reduced exposure to allergens in childhood as well as decreased parasite load and lower rates of infectious disease, tolerance is now decreasing in humans raised in our society.
But tolerance can be created! A great deal of research has shown that oral exposure to allergens results in the body gradually acquiring tolerance to them. As such Dr Paul uses oral sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) to reduce the bodies reaction to allergens, rather than suppressing them with anti-allergy medications such as antihistamines.
In order to receive SLIT, Dr Paul will first test you for reactivity to allergens. It is a standardized prick test, like that shown in the photo above. The cost for this test is $125 and it takes about 15 minutes to preform. Then a round of sublingual therapy will be administered. It is an oral solution that is given once per day. The first doseof this solution must be given in Dr Paul’s office due to the slight risk of an allergic reaction.
Sublingual immunotherapy is an excellent therapy for allergies, but also for many respiratory conditions which are mediated by the immune system. It can also be beneficial in:
- Chronic Respirtory infections (colds and flu)
- Autoimmune disease
This therapy and assesment also has no wait times. Dr Paul can usually see people within a week, rather than the 6-7 month waiting period typical for most allergists.
If you would like to book in for an assessment to determine your allergies, or a free 15 minute visit to determine whether or not you and Dr Paul would be a good fit together, please do Contact us.
